According to Google, Pixel 3a and 3a XL owners can look forward to a final update
The Pixel 3a is one of the best phones ever received in Google’s history. Readers and reviewers loved it, as did the larger Pixel 3a XL for offering a great software experience and camera at an amazing price. Unfortunately for many of the remaining owners, the 2019 mid-era rangers have officially been abandoned. Google’s three-year update promised to transform the pumpkin this very month, ushering in the end of software updates—with one exception. Google tells us that the final update is due to arrive by July.
earlier in the day, The Pixel 3a series got the latest explicitly guaranteed update. When a Google spokesperson was asked to comment on the expiration of the software commitment for the Pixel 3a series, a Google spokesperson provided Android Police with the following statement:
“In May 2019 at the launch of the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, we announced that devices would receive three years of software updates and three years of security updates since our devices first became available on the Google Store. Final update for the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be rolled out to users by July 2022.”
This is not unusual. It’s actually the format that Google usually follows for now-expired devices. When the standard three-year software update commitment for the flagship Pixel ends, the fall date usually (and unfortunately) aligns very closely with Android’s release schedule, meaning they fall behind once the new version arrives. The Pixels get the same promise for security patches as OS updates, meaning they get updated to this brand new version as support ends.
It’s a perfect storm of bugs, so Google has been doing a final final update for about two months distance The software update window closes, offering a bunch of final fixes for new problems after they’ve had a little extra time to cook. And here’s what’s promised: The Pixel 3a series will get a final bug-fix update “by July 2022,” Google tells us. can that language Technically It means any time between now and the end of July, but it most likely means a final update at the expected time in early July – or for devices that have expired so far.
Life is short for some of our favorite phones.
The final update two months after reaching the end of software support has been a standard for pixels for a while. The only oddity is that the Pixel 3a was released in the spring, not the fall, as all the Pixels that came before it were. If history is any indication, it will run the current platform’s Final Quarterly Update (Android 12 QPR2), a May 2022 security patch level, and won’t get most of the feature-dropping changes coming for June – think bug fixes, not features new.
This marks the end of an era for Pixel 3a and 3a XL, two of the most loved phones among Android Police employees. They weren’t the fastest phone you could get in 2019, and they didn’t have the biggest or smoothest screens, wireless charging, RAM/storage, or even IP ratings, but they were. unbelievable The value is here in the US, where we don’t often enjoy the kinds of crazy cheap phones that some other markets have. 3a was so good, she won a file 2019 Smartphone Most Wanted Award of the Year. Jules Wang from Android Police called it this recently “The Living Legacy of Google’s Phone Lineage,” Many have compared the a-series and its first entry to the reborn Nexus line. And now, only a few months stand between the Pixel 3a and software obsolescence.
